In an article published on Tuesday, The Free Lance-Star made accusations about Mr. Twigg, chair of the Spotsylvania County school board.
They claimed that he, "requested to reschedule the public hearing on the budget proposal".
They supported this claim by revealing a January email exchange between Twigg and members of the Board of Supervisors.
“We request that you allow four weeks [February 20] to compile this specific list of itemized investments from the available $14M.”
Twigg stated in the email.
They then claimed that he lied about this during a meeting on February 14th, when he stated:
“I would like to inform the community that I did not tell the county staff to reschedule the public hearing on the carryover.”
We would like to point out that these two statements have no relation.
In the email, Twigg asks for four weeks to compile a list of itemized investments, for sake of time.
In the February hearing, he stated that he did not ask to reschedule the public hearing, while simultaneously supporting the budget request.
Twigg requesting time to compile a list to present, is not him specifically, "asking to reschedule the public hearing". Clearly, he wants to make sure the budget he presents is the choicest.
The Free Lance-Star tries to draw a line of relevance between these two things when they are irrelevant to the budget request, which was already passed by the board.
They also attempt to frame Twigg as anti-budget and opposed to funding, ignoring his own public statements in favor of cherry-picked, irrelevant details from an email.
This is a False Equivalence
The Free Lance-Star has notoriously spread falsities about Twigg and the budget, which has led to public confusion.
